WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - A quartet of Washington State University baseball student-athletes were named to the Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic First Team, commissioner Tom Hansen announced, Friday.
Senior starting pitcher Jayson Miller, senior relief pitcher Steve Kost, junior catcher Greg Lagreid and sophomore outfielder Matt Fanelli garnered first team honors. In addition, senior outfielder Scott Suttmeier was named second team while senior first baseman Jim Murphy, junior outfielder/pitcher Jared Prince, sophomore pitcher Michael Ratigan and sophomore second baseman Michael Weber received honorable mention.
The four-first team selections and the nine student-athlete accolades overall are the most for Washington State since five-first team honorees and 10 overall in 1998. Both marks are also tops in the conference this year.
Miller earned his third-straight first team honor. The Richland, Wash., native posted a 3.69 grade point average in accounting. He was named Pac-10 honorable mention on the diamond after posting an 8-1 record with a 4.06 earned run average.
Kost, a native of Bellevue, Wash., also earned his third-consecutive first team award. An accounting major with a 3.59 GPA, Kost is the Cougar record holder for career appearances as a pitcher with 89.
A native of Edmonds, Wash., Lagreid was honored for the second-straight season after being a second-team selection in 2007. A finance major with a 3.44 GPA, Lagreid registered a career-best .282 batting average.
Fanelli, a psychology major with a 3.81 GPA was selected in his first year of eligibility. He played in 33 games, including 15 starts and did not commit an error in the field.
